User Problem
Surgeons and medical professionals need a way to explore insights from medical imaging before entering the operating room, leading to a demand for an intuitive and efficient web-based platform.
Business Problem
Surgalign aims to leverage the HOLO Portal, an augmented reality spine navigation platform powered by AI, to address the user problem and to unlock the potential for other medical imaging applications. This cloud-based product serves as a driver to implement new cloud infrastructure to support future products and data analytics needs.
The Solution
The UI for the web-based HOLO Portal simplifies the user experience into two main concepts: Jobs and Upload. Customers can explore insights from medical imaging studies, facilitates file uploads, automatic parsing, grouping of imaging studies, and tracking algorithm versions.
Design System
Background
A central tenet to Surgalign’s digital strategy was the HOLO Portal, the world’s first augmented reality spine navigation platform powered by artificial intelligence. The artificial intelligence platform built for the HOLO Portal held immense potential for other medical imaging applications. I creating the UI for this web-based portal to let our customers explore insights of their medical imaging prior to stepping foot in the O.R.

This Product was the company’s first cloud-based product. In addition to realizing the product, it is used as a driver to implement brand new cloud infrastructure. This infrastructure would also support the company’s future cloud-based products and data analytic needs. (Including the integration of HOLO Portal into the cloud.)
To simplify user experience, I designed the user experience into two main concepts: Jobs and Upload, an action to review and upload.

Releases
As well as the design for the user interface, I co-authored the Release Notes for Product Support and Regulatory purposes.
| sw Version | Release Date |
| 1.1.0 | February 8, 2023 |
| 1.2.0 | March 6, 2023 |
| 2.0.0 | April 20, 2023 |
| 2.0.1 | May 3, 2023 |
| 2.1.0 | July 27, 2023 |
Supported Functionality: File upload of imaging studies Automatic parsing and grouping of imaging studies into imaging series and research jobs to be analyzed together Analysis… Tracking of algorithm versions used for study analysis
Supported Imaging Studies: Studies Lumbar MRI studies containing both a Sagittal T2 and Axial T2 series File extensions: .DCM .DICOM .dcm .dicom ,zip …
Supported Devices: HOLO AI Research only officially supports the latest Desktop version of the Google Chrome Web Browser. The product may be used with other web browsers and devices but certain features may not function as intended, especially when using a mobile device.
During the project, I engaged in several essential activities to develop and refine features. We carefully examined each feature idea, created detailed stories around them, and estimated the effort required for their implementation. Additionally, I collaborated closely with systems engineering on a weekly basis to evaluate the potential impact of user interface (UI) proposals. These steps allowed us to progress effectively and ensure the best possible outcomes for our UI.
Next Steps
User Feedback and Iteration: Gather feedback from users and surgeons using the cloud product in real-world scenarios. Identify paint points, usability issues and improvements to enhance the user experience.
Cloud Infrastructure Optimization: Optimize the cloud infrastructure to handle increased user demand, ensure scalability, and provide a seamless experience to users even during peak usage.
Expand Suuported Imaging Studies and Devices: Increase the platform’s compatibility by adding support for additional imaging studies (CT, plain-film X-ray) and web broswers/mobile devices to accomodate a broader range of users.
Integration with Other Medical Applications: Explore opportunities to integrate HOLO AI Insights with other medical imaging applications, leveraging the AI platform to be delivered to physician’s existing workflows.
Marketing and Outreach: Promote HOLO AI Insights through marketing channels to reach wider audiences. Highlight the benefits and clinical relevance through white papers and publications.
