During my tenure as the editor of “The Soup,” a quarterly internal newsletter, I had the unique opportunity to showcase my expertise as a UI/UX designer while delving into the clinical world. With over 8 years of experience in clinical environments, particularly in the operating room (OR), I possess a deep understanding of the healthcare industry, including the purchasing process, digital strategies for adoption, reimbursement, and clinical pathways for spine, neuro, and cardio specialties. “The Soup” was designed to be more than just a newsletter—it aimed to be a valuable resource for the entire company, providing clinical best practices and offering in-depth competitive backgrounders.
Designing a Newsletter People Wanted to Read
By combining my design skills with my extensive clinical knowledge, I was able to create an informative and engaging publication that was widely leveraged by employees across the organization, including executive leadership. Throughout my 2.5-year tenure, each edition of “The Soup” was highly anticipated, generating excitement and fostering a sense of community within the company. The newsletter not only shared valuable clinical insights and best practices but also served as a platform for profound product feedback and groundbreaking applications of our technology.
As the editor, illustrator, organizer, and distributor, I took on multiple roles to ensure the success of “The Soup.” I meticulously curated content from various sources, including interviews with clinicians and subject matter experts, and transformed complex medical information into accessible and visually appealing articles. By combining engaging visuals, user-friendly layouts, and concise yet informative content, I aimed to capture the attention of readers and keep them engaged throughout the publication.
How did I contribute to a richer newsletter?
One of the key highlights of my role was the integration of illustrations to enhance the storytelling experience. As an illustrator, I brought clinical scenarios to life, creating visual narratives that resonated with readers and allowed them to grasp complex concepts more easily. These illustrations became an integral part of the newsletter’s identity and contributed to its wide appeal. Moreover, I actively collaborated with stakeholders, including product teams and clinicians, to gather valuable feedback and incorporate it into subsequent editions. This iterative process helped refine our technology, align it with clinical needs, and drive meaningful improvements. The resulting feedback loop not only fostered engagement but also demonstrated the value of “The Soup” as a channel for open communication and collaboration within the organization.
Overall, my experience as the editor of “The Soup” allowed me to combine my clinical expertise, design skills, and project management abilities to create a highly regarded internal newsletter. By providing clinical best practices, competitive analysis, and showcasing groundbreaking applications of our technology, “The Soup” became an essential resource that united the company and contributed to its success in the healthcare industry.
